Carols in the Square 2010

Ben BrownMany thanks to all of you who braved a bitterly cold evening to come along to cheer on BBC newscaster, Ben Brown (pictured right), as he switched on the lights on Battersea Square's magnificent Christmas tree. If you weren't there you can see what you missed in our photogallery of the night's events. Thanks to Monica Szajna of MS Photography for her great photographs.

Over 400 visitors thronged the square, temporarily closed to traffic, and enjoyed mince pies, mulled wine and hot soup. The Mayor of Wandsworth, Piers McCausland, helped Friends Chairman Ben Thomas get things going, before The Gentlemen of St John's, the world-renowned a capella group from St John's College, Cambridge, entertained the appreciative crowd with Christmas carols and other festive songs. They were ably supported by Mardi Brass, a professional brass quintet who brought a real yuletide flavour to the proceedings.

Visitors had their own chance to exercise their vocal chords with help from the choir of St Mary's Church, Battersea Church Road, Thomas's Choral Society, the Salesian College, members of the Roman Catholic Church in Trott Street, families from L'Ecole des Petits and parents, staff and pupils of Thomas's School.

The climax of the evening was a spectacular (and unadvertised) firework display from the roof of Thomas's School which enthralled the crowd (pictured below).
