Carols in the Square 2012

This year the popular Christmas Event organised by the Friends of Battersea Square and sponsored by John D Wood and Co took place in Battersea Square on Tuesday 4th December 2012.

It was a very cold night, but the growing crowd was in good spirits. Before the main festivities got going there was a stirring performance by drama pupils from Ashcroft Academy of an extract of Oedipus Rex by Sophocles.

Mardi Brass, the professional brass quintet started the ball rolling with some rousing festive music, and the appreciative crowd sang along with gusto to traditional Christmas carols (below). They were ably supported by the choir of St Mary’s Church, Battersea and singers from local primary schools including Westbridge, High View, Sacred Heart, St Mary’s and Thomas’s.

Getting into the spirit

A stunning firework display preceded the switching on of the lights on the magnificent Christmas tree by the Mayor of Wandsworth councillor Adrian Knowles. As usual mulled wine, mincepies, hot chocolate and soup were on offer around the Square and the the local pubs, bars and restaurants did brisk business.

There was a collection during the evening in aid of the Katherine Low Settlement and the Battersea Summer Scheme.
